Becky Gottsegen grew up in Baton Rouge but moved to New Orleans in 1986. She graduated from UNO with a liberal arts degree and began working with an architect in a furniture design business. After selling her interest in the business she opened a furniture gallery in New Orleans where she showed hand-crafted designs by 30+ Louisiana artists including her own. She had always wanted to work in clay and after selling the gallery and moving to Baton Rouge after Katrina she and her husband built a home in Baton Rouge and put in a studio for her including a 220 outlet for a kiln.

 

Becky’s dream was to do figurative sculpture but unfortunately there were no classes for hand building in clay so Becky began taking workshops each summer with some of the best figurative artists in the country and even one in the UK, including Christina West, Tip Toland, Bruno Lucchesi, Philipe Faraut, Curt LaCross and Dirk Staschke. She has developed a style of her own influenced by the great teachers from whom she has learned and loves sharing her skills and knowledge.

 

Becky has had pieces of her sculpture in a number of group shows including the Baton Rouge Gallery and District Clay Gallery in Washington, D.C. She also had a two person show at the Manship Gallery in Baton Rouge entitled “Finding the Forgotten in the Shadows of the Mind” with 15 of her sculptures of people living with dementia, and had a solo show at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, Louisiana, entitled “Out of the Mouths of Babes.”
